“Unique Commitment” Recognized: Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Gifts Nobel to Trump

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado cited President Donald Trump’s “unique commitment” to freedom as the reason for gifting him her Nobel Peace Prize medal. The presentation took place during their first meeting at the White House on Thursday. Machado described the encounter as “great” and the gift as a symbol of profound gratitude.

The gesture is particularly significant given Trump’s vocal desire for the Nobel Peace Prize. While Machado has provided the medal, the Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified that the prize is non-transferable. The honor remains with Machado, a fact the committee emphasized in a public statement.

Machado drew on the history of the Americas to explain the gift. She compared it to the Marquis de Lafayette’s support for Simon Bolivar, stating that the “people of Bolivar” were honoring the “heir of Washington.” This historical narrative seeks to bind the two nations together.

The meeting occurred despite Trump’s previous dismissal of Machado as unfit. His administration has also been pressuring interim president Delcy Rodriguez regarding U.S. oil firms, using threats of force as leverage. This context highlights the complexity of U.S. engagement in Venezuela.

Machado, however, remained optimistic. She insisted that Trump knows the situation and cares about the people. The gift of the medal is a strategic move to solidify the alliance and ensure continued U.S. support for her opposition movement.
