India etched their name into cricket history on Sunday night, becoming the first men’s team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title. In front of a packed crowd of 100,000 roaring supporters, India dismantled New Zealand comprehensively, winning by 96 runs in a final that was effectively over before the halfway point.
New Zealand’s campaign at major tournaments continues to end in heartbreak. This was their fourth World Cup final since 2015 across formats, and they lost all four. Combined with their Champions Trophy defeat last year, the Black Caps are becoming the most decorated bridesmaids in cricket history.
India posted a massive 255 runs, fueled by a blazing powerplay that saw them reach 92 without loss after just six overs — equalling the highest powerplay score in World Cup history. Sanju Samson top-scored with 89 off 46 balls while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan both contributed half-centuries. In reply, New Zealand crumbled to 159, with Jasprit Bumrah taking three wickets.
The victory also made India the first side ever to win the T20 World Cup on home soil. The tournament, co-hosted by India, was dominated by the home side from start to finish. Three of the four scores above 250 in this competition were made by India, underlining their batting dominance throughout.
Bumrah, who took three wickets with mesmerizing slow yorkers, was named Player of the Match. Captain Suryakumar Yadav lifted the trophy in front of an ecstatic crowd. India have now demonstrated that they are not just a great team — they are a generational one.
