In a significant move towards resolving the longstanding conflict in the Middle East, Italy hosted the second day of the Global Alliance on the Two-State Solution in Rome. This gathering brought together representatives from over 20 countries, alongside the Arab League, the European Union, the United Nations, and Palestine, to deliberate on strategies for establishing lasting peace in the region.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized Italy’s commitment to supporting the creation of a Palestinian state. However, he noted that recognition should follow only when the conditions are conducive to forming a peaceful and stable state that can coexist alongside Israel. Tajani highlighted the necessity of mutual recognition, security, and ongoing dialogue as essential components for achieving a durable two-state solution.
The meeting also underscored Italy’s expanding influence in international diplomacy and peacebuilding, as evidenced by the upcoming discussions between Israel and Lebanon. Tajani expressed concerns about the escalating violence in the West Bank, condemning recent attacks by Israeli settlers. He also opposed any expansion or annexation of settlements that might jeopardize peace prospects.
