China and Switzerland have successfully wrapped up negotiations to enhance their existing free trade agreement, a move that signals a commitment to deepening economic ties between the two nations amid the current global trade tensions. The announcement was made in Bern by Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who also signed a memorandum of understanding to mark the conclusion of these discussions.
The upgraded trade agreement, which follows five rounds of talks that began in September 2024, aims to broaden mutual market access across various sectors, including trade in goods and services, investment, and trade regulations. Both countries anticipate that this revised pact will offer a more stable and predictable environment for businesses, thereby reinforcing their long-term economic collaboration.
This development builds upon the foundations laid by the original China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in 2013 and implemented in 2014. The enhancements to the agreement are expected to facilitate more seamless trade exchanges and bolster economic relations between the two countries, providing new opportunities for businesses operating in both markets.
Before the upgraded agreement can take full effect, China and Switzerland will need to complete their respective domestic approval processes.
