President Donald Trump is optimistic about his “big meeting” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite a new trade spat over China’s control of rare earth minerals.
“I think it’s going to work out very well,” Trump said from Tokyo. The leaders are set to meet on Thursday in South Korea on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
The spat over rare earths led the US to threaten 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, starting November 1. This new flare-up has broken a recent truce.
The conflict has also seen new US port fees and subsequent Chinese countermeasures.
Trump, however, projected confidence. “We are gonna be (having) a fantastic meeting,” he said, adding it would be “great for everybody.”
