by admin477351

Austria is contemplating a partnership with Luxembourg in the GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative, aiming to enhance their defense and security alliance. This development follows discussions held in Luxembourg between Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner and her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes. The talks centered on expanding their bilateral cooperation in areas such as defense, space exploration, and cybersecurity.

During the visit, Minister Tanner also engaged with SES, a satellite operator, to explore Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 project. Tanner emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications, particularly in the context of escalating geopolitical tensions. She noted that strengthening cooperation in this field would bolster the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic independence.

The GovSat 2 satellite is intended to deliver secure communication services for Luxembourg’s defense sector, as well as for the European Union, NATO, and allied nations. The launch of this satellite is currently planned for 2029, marking a significant milestone in European defense communication capabilities.

In addition to the satellite discussions, Austria and Luxembourg formalized their intentions to enhance collaboration across several defense-related domains. This includes signing a letter of intent to work together in cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. However, Austria has yet to disclose the level of investment it might commit if it decides to join the GovSat 2 project.
