Moving Day Mobility: How to Safely Transport Your Pet to a New Home

by admin477351

Moving to a new house is one of the most stressful life events, and it’s just as disruptive for our pets. Their entire world is being packed into boxes. Transporting them safely and calmly amidst the chaos is a special kind of travel that requires a dedicated plan.

The carrier is their safe room. In the weeks leading up to the move, make their carrier the most secure and comforting place in the house. As rooms empty and chaos ensues, this familiar den will be their anchor. On moving day, place them in the carrier in a quiet, empty room (like a bathroom) with a “Do Not Enter” sign, to prevent them from escaping or getting stressed by the movers.

Plan their journey separately. Whether the move is across town or across the country, your pet should travel with you in your vehicle, not in a moving van. The van is unsafe due to lack of ventilation, temperature control, and security. Pack a “first night” box for your pet with their food, water bowls, bed, and favourite toys, and keep it with you for immediate access upon arrival.

Settle them in with care. Once you arrive at the new home, set up a single room for your pet with all their familiar items before letting them out of the carrier. This allows them to acclimate to one space before being overwhelmed by the entire house. Ensure their ID tags and microchip are updated with your new address as soon as possible. This careful approach to their travel day makes the transition to a new home much smoother.
