Iran has accused Qatar of hindering its investigation into the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who reportedly disappeared during a recent conflict. Tehran claims these pilots were last seen near Qatar, which has denied the allegations and insists it is not holding them. The situation has intensified tensions between the two nations, prompting calls for international mediation.
An Iranian military official, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, stated that a team of Iranian Air Force experts has been awaiting clearance to travel to Qatar to look into the pilots’ disappearance. He has appealed to Doha to permit this visit and has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to get involved in resolving the issue. Iran has declared that it managed to retrieve the body of one pilot, Majid Kazemi, who was killed in an incident involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
On the other hand, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has categorically denied the accusations that the pilots are being detained by Qatar. According to him, the pilots had breached Qatari airspace and failed to respond to communication attempts, prompting Qatar to take defensive actions. Qatar asserts that its search and rescue teams have been actively working to locate the pilots and their remains.
Qatar has stated that it coordinated with Iran regarding the transfer of the remains of the pilot it recovered, and claims that Iranian authorities were invited as early as April to send a delegation to receive detailed information about the search and rescue efforts. However, according to Qatar, this invitation has not been acknowledged by Iran.
This disagreement unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the US, and other countries. Qatar has been playing a significant diplomatic role in mediating these tensions and facilitating dialogue among the involved parties.
