Luxembourg City is seeking to enhance its security measures by expanding CCTV surveillance in the city centre. Mayor Lydie Polfer has made a formal request to Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to approve the installation of new CCTV cameras. Although the municipal council has approved the proposal in principle, the exact number and locations of the cameras remain undetermined.
To finalize these details, the police will conduct an assessment of security needs to identify priority areas for camera installation. Mayor Polfer acknowledged that while CCTV cameras may not prevent all crimes, they are crucial tools for investigators in identifying suspects and reconstructing incidents.
This move follows previous expansions of surveillance in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, initiatives driven by Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer in response to increasing security concerns and reported offences. Bauer emphasized that the city aims to equip police with the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.
The proposal has garnered support from local business owners and residents who have called for stronger security measures to combat issues such as pickpocketing. Supporters believe that the presence of CCTV cameras could not only aid police investigations through footage but also serve as a deterrent to criminal activity.
