In 2025, Luxembourg found itself among the least successful European Union countries in terms of renewable electricity consumption, according to recent Eurostat data. Despite a general upward trend in renewable energy usage across the EU, Luxembourg’s reliance on renewable sources reached only 20.2% of its gross final energy consumption, placing it near the bottom of the list. Specifically, renewable sources accounted for just 23.3% of Luxembourg’s gross electricity consumption, with only Czechia and Malta trailing behind.
The broader picture in the European Union showed a more promising scenario, with renewable energy comprising 26.2% of the overall gross final energy consumption in 2025. This marked a significant increase from the 9.6% recorded in 2004. The EU has set an ambitious goal to boost this percentage to 42.5% by the year 2030, indicating a continued commitment to expanding renewable energy use across its member states.
Leading the charge in renewable energy consumption, Sweden registered an impressive 65.4% of its overall energy needs being met through renewable sources. This positioned Sweden at the forefront of the EU’s green energy efforts, closely followed by Finland and Denmark. These countries exemplify the strides being made towards sustainable energy solutions within the bloc.
Austria, in particular, stood out for its remarkable achievement in renewable electricity consumption. It led the EU rankings by generating more than 90% of its electricity from renewable sources. This commitment places Austria in a strong position to meet and potentially exceed the EU’s renewable energy targets for the coming years.
