Vietnam and Switzerland are working to enhance their longstanding relationship, focusing on expanding cooperation across several sectors, including trade, investment, innovation, science, and technology. The commitment was emphasized during an event in Bern marking Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh underscored the significance of the bilateral relationship, highlighting Switzerland’s historical support for Vietnam. She noted the progress in their political, economic, and educational partnerships and expressed Vietnam’s desire to deepen ties through increased political trust and expanded economic collaboration in areas like science and technology.
Economic cooperation forms a cornerstone of Vietnamese-Swiss relations, with bilateral trade surpassing $2 billion annually. Over 100 Swiss companies are active in Vietnam, investing in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. Thanh pointed out the potential for further collaboration in fields where Switzerland excels and Vietnam has burgeoning development needs.
Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia acknowledged the significant expansion of bilateral cooperation since Vietnam’s economic reforms. He highlighted Switzerland’s ongoing support for Vietnam’s economic modernization and sustainable development goals.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh drew attention to the planned establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership by 2025 and the conclusion of negotiations on a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association as significant milestones in their bilateral journey.
Both countries see opportunities for further cooperation in innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development, aiming to build a robust partnership that leverages their respective strengths.
