Italy will continue its diplomatic relations with Egypt, despite calls to sever ties following the conviction of Egyptian security officials in the abduction case of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni. This decision was confirmed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who emphasized the importance of maintaining communications to seek the truth about the case.
A recent ruling by a Rome court sentenced three Egyptian officials to ten years in prison for their involvement in Regeni’s abduction, while a fourth official was acquitted. The court’s decision, however, did not assign responsibility for Regeni’s torture and murder, and the verdict is still open to appeal.
Meloni expressed her support for Regeni’s family, reaffirming the Italian government’s commitment to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the case. She argued that keeping diplomatic channels open with Egypt is crucial for continuing to press for answers and accountability.
Echoing this sentiment, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani defended the government’s stance, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts with Egyptian authorities. Tajani reiterated that Italy remains focused on identifying those responsible for Regeni’s death and ensuring that justice is served.
The court’s ruling has sparked criticism from opposition lawmakers in Italy, who are demanding more decisive government action and increased accountability from Egypt. Despite this pressure, the Italian government maintains that diplomatic engagement is the best path forward in pursuing justice for Regeni.
