PAL-V, a Dutch company, has taken a significant step toward making its Liberty flying car a reality for consumers. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted the company permission to start producing aviation components for the innovative vehicle. This development brings PAL-V’s vision of a flying car closer to fruition, with the next crucial milestone being the full certification of the Liberty as an aircraft, a goal the company aims to achieve by 2028.
The Liberty stands out as a hybrid vehicle, combining the convenience of a road car with the capabilities of flight. Equipped with a retractable rotor and propeller, it operates like a conventional car on land but can transition to flight mode when needed. Unlike helicopters, the Liberty requires a runway for takeoff and landing, as it cannot lift off vertically. Drivers will need both a driving license and a pilot’s license to operate this dual-function vehicle.
With a top speed of around 160 km/h on the road and an estimated flying range of 500 kilometers, the Liberty offers a versatile transportation solution. Starting at approximately €299,000, excluding taxes and additional costs, the vehicle has already generated significant interest. PAL-V reports that the first 250 units have been sold, including some purchased by the Dutch fire brigade.
The EASA’s approval marks an important step for PAL-V, yet the full certification of the Liberty as an aircraft is essential for its commercial deployment. Should the company achieve this by its anticipated timeline, the skies could see the introduction of flying cars as early as 2028, potentially transforming personal and emergency transportation.
