Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, despite acknowledging potential political repercussions. In a statement featured in an interview for an upcoming book, Meloni emphasized that maintaining military and economic aid to Kyiv aligns with Italy’s national interests, even though some Italian voters may oppose the policy.
Meloni argued that Italy has a vested interest in upholding an international order based on law rather than military dominance. She warned that allowing powerful nations to impose their will by force would ultimately not serve Italy’s interests. Her remarks come amid internal disagreements within Italy’s governing coalition regarding continued support for Ukraine.
Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini has voiced opposition to the policy, expressing a desire to end Italy’s economic and military assistance to Kyiv. On the other hand, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has reiterated Italy’s commitment to Ukraine, noting that preparations for another assistance package are underway.
These differing stances underscore divisions within the coalition government. However, Meloni has clarified that under her leadership, Italy will persist in its support for Ukraine despite the internal disputes. Her stance highlights the balancing act required to maintain a unified government approach while navigating international obligations and domestic political challenges.
