He labeled the incident as unprecedented, noting it marks the first known attempt by a Russian-linked actor to target a U.S. citizen on the soil of another NATO member. The intended victim is reportedly a U.S. national of Ukrainian descent, whom the Russian government allegedly perceived as a threat.
A suspect, accused of being recruited by Russian intelligence services, was apprehended in Poland on August 7 and is currently detained for a period of three months. This operation was reportedly executed in collaboration with U.S. intelligence agencies, as stated by the Polish minister overseeing intelligence services. The incident adds to the rising apprehensions in Europe about purported Russian operations targeting political adversaries, supporters of Ukraine, and other figures deemed hostile to Moscow.
European authorities have previously disrupted suspected plots involving assassination, sabotage, and arson, which are allegedly linked to Russian intelligence networks.
